People born before 5th November 1953 automatically get a Winter Fuel Payment each year to help pay for heating bills. For many people with limited income, this additional money is the difference between heating and eating.

Many people that are more fortunate also receive the payment and feel that they do not need it as they have other sources of income. Some people have told us that they feel guilty about this, as they know there are other more needy people who could benefit from it but they don’t know what to do to get it to someone who needs it. Even if they could identify someone who needed it, it could be awkward and embarrassing to try to offer it to someone directly.

Every day Citizens Advice supports people who are struggling to get by and in particular, to pay utility bills. People with lower incomes are disadvantaged even further as they often live in properties with pre-payment meters. These charge more for the gas and electricity and restrict the ability to shop around for a better deal.

We support people to access the correct benefits, to manage their money as efficiently and effectively as possible, and to find ways to increase their income. We do everything we can to ensure that no one experiences a cold winter.

If you are someone who receives a Winter Fuel Payment that you would prefer helps someone who really needs it, there are various things you can do such as donating to your local Citizens Advice, thereby ensuring we are able to support even more vulnerable people unable to afford heating this winter.

And if you need help with heating this winter call Citizens Advice on 03444 111 444 or drop in to speak to an advisor.
